2022: The Future of Our Societies and Cultures

Published: January 9, 2022

As 2022 starts, it is becoming apparent that the most vibrant, successful and progressive cultures and societies in history are destroying themselves. It is because we have forgotten what a wonder they actually are.

I watched Tucker Carlson yesterday, and he was discussing NPR, a state-funded radio station in the US. He observed that it was once a staid and rather pompous institution but had now descended into mindless Wokeism. The story of the descent of NPR into the ugliness and idiocy of Wokeism is a small story but captures a far more significant story. That was Tucker Carlson’s point. It was symbolic of a wider malaise.

A similar point was made some time ago by Emma Webb in a video in the New Culture Forum’s Heresies series. The video is titled “Britains Silent Cultural Revolution“, and she directly compares China’s cultural revolution under Mao and the processes taking place in the UK. The comparison that Webb makes provides a compelling case for the idea that Wokeism is overtaking and destroying the culture of the UK. The video’s narrative seeks to remind the audience that, although far from perfect, the culture of the UK is something of value and worth preserving.

Webb’s narrative for the UK could apply to any country in the Anglosphere. Someone could tell a similar story for Australia. Canada, under Justin Trudeau, seems to have already fallen deep into the abyss of Wokeism. Here in New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern and her Labour Party are rapidly ripping away the foundations of liberalism to create a Wokeism inspired ethno-nationalist state.

I recently made a video that lauded Capitalism, which has sadly not gained much traction. The lack of traction might be because I am a minor player in the culture wars, or the video is not that great. However, it may also be because of the title, “Capitalism: the most beautiful idea.” I suspect that it may make some people uncomfortable. I can almost hear people say, “Capitalism, a beautiful idea? Well, it is necessary, but let’s not go too far, eh?” However, that same imagined person will not only feel discomfort with lauding Capitalism but an even greater discomfort if I were to say that the Anglosphere countries’ societies and culture, and much of the liberal democratic world, are the most outstanding achievements of humankind.

The West, along with liberal democracies elsewhere, and I believe the Anglosphere, in particular, have achieved wonders without parallel in human history.

So, what are the wonders and achievements?

The first of the achievements is material wealth. Just take a look around you, and you will see it everywhere. Just for a moment, really look around you, and do so with fresh eyes. Compared with any place and time in history, we are surrounded by an abundance of food, goods and services. Even the poor amongst us have more than could have been imagined by any of the poor of the past. And the material wealth that has flowed from Capitalism allowed us to have truly amazing healthcare and education. No societies anywhere in the entirety of history have had so much wealth, education and health as our societies. Never. Anywhere.

But is it not just our societies’ wealth, health and education that makes them so wonderful. We have systems of justice that, whilst imperfect, are still the fairest and most even-handed systems of justice ever seen. Furthermore, we have uniquely developed a rights-based system designed to protect all people in society from prejudice based on race, religion and even sexuality. The extent and depth of these systems are without any precedent in history. They represent the formalisation of the fairest, most tolerant and progressive societies and cultures in history. Truly a wonder. Amazing.

And if we are not happy with the way we are governed, we have systems of democracy to throw out those in power and put in place a new government. Again, the system is imperfect, but, as Churchill quipped, democracy is the worst form of government except for all the rest. Nothing better has been devised. And, even with the sorry state of democracy now, it remains a wonder and an achievement.

So, here we all are, living in the most wonderful and amazing societies in human history. And what are we doing? Watching the very foundations of those societies being ripped apart.

And what are those foundations? There are three; Capitalism, liberal democracy, and science.

The short story presented by Tucker Carlson, and the longer video from Emma Webb, both discuss the same problem, which is the invasion of our institutions by people who resolutely oppose the three key foundations of our societies and cultures. Whenever they enter an institution, they set about destroying it. And they do so whilst proclaiming that our society and cultures are uniquely evil.

I want you to think about that, that they proclaim the most wealthy, educated, healthy, fair and tolerant societies and cultures in history are uniquely evil. It really is, when you think about it, the most stunningly absurd claim. Again, take a look around you and think about the world you live in. That they get away with it is simply because most people have not paused and really thought about it. And, on the back of this absurd claim, they wish to tear down these amazing societies and remake them anew?

And, despite their absurdity, they are succeeding.

So, as 2022 gets off to its liberty sapping, pandemic hysterical start, we need to take a pause and think about the wonder of what the West, and the Anglosphere, in particular, has achieved. We created the greatest societies and cultures that have ever existed.

And, if we do not start to fight to protect them, we are going to lose them. As a friend confided to me recently, “I think we are entering a new dark age,” and he will be right – but only if we let it happen.

As expected, Omicron hysteria is now taking over New Zealand. Unfortunately, the government is yet again demonstrating that they are idiots and very dangerous ones at that. The self-isolation rules...are a potential disaster. I watched a video clip of Nigel Farage...
