For some Kiwis in the thrall of Covid hysteria, a doctor losing her registration for helping people avoid vaccine mandates and other authoritarian Covid vaccine measures is a “good thing.” However, when the state goes after that same doctor’s family business, maybe even the most ardent supporters of Covid authoritarianism might pause and wonder what is going on.
As you would expect, as soon as the media became aware that a doctor, Jonie Girouard, was helping people avoid vaccine rules, they set about ensuring her destruction. The story started with an investigation by the absurdly smug Patrick Gower of Newshub. Gower pompously described their investigation into Girouard as “an undercover operation” (“so we went in undercover with a highly-experienced journalist using a hidden camera”) – as if it was something reminiscent of infiltrating a bike gang or a criminal network. However, despite their silly self-important description of their investigation, there is no denying that they found Girouard was providing exemptions for those not wishing to be vaccinated.
Following the reporting from Newshub about the exemptions, there was an inevitable media pile-on. I will not detail that here, but it was ugly. Inevitably, the New Zealand Medical Council, the ‘guild’ organisation for doctors, investigated and de-registered Girouard as a doctor in New Zealand.
I am, like many others, 100% against the vaccine mandates and passports, which are massive authoritarian overreach by the government and fundamentally wrong. As such, Girouard has my sympathy and support. She took a moral stand against an unjust policy. However, many in New Zealand would strongly disagree with my sympathetic view of Girouard. They will presumably agree that the loss of her registration as a doctor in New Zealand is a good thing. However, what has followed should give even such people pause for thought.
After a public flogging by the media and the Medical Council stripping of her status, seemingly, this was not enough for the Labour government or media. The police quickly announced they were investigating Girouard after a complaint from the medical association, even discussing charges of fraud:
“Police have a range of resources when investigating fraud complaints and an individual could find themselves charged under the Crimes Act or the Covid-19 Health Act,” a spokesperson said.
Still, this was not enough. According to reporting in Stuff, the state is now going after Girouard’s tiny weight-loss chocolate business. The business, of course, has no connection with the issue of the vaccination exemptions, but suddenly, it is under the scrutiny of the Ministry for Primary Industries:
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will look into a North Canterbury chocolate business run by an anti-vaccine former doctor for using a new sugar substitute not yet approved in New Zealand.
Jonie G’s Guilt Free Chocolate – a keto, vegan, and diabetes-friendly chocolate range sweetened with sugar substitute allulose – still appears to be in operation, and as of Monday even had what looked like a new website set up.
Allulose is a naturally-derived product that can be extracted from plants like corn or wheat, and is extremely low in calories.
MPI has confirmed Girouard’s use of allulose may not be legal.
Later, the article admits that allulose is not banned in New Zealand and other countries permit its use. Furthermore, as per the description in the article, there seem to be no safety concerns with allulose. And yet, suddenly, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) is interested in a tiny chocolate business for using allulose. When I say a tiny business, I mean tiny. They operate the chocolate business from the back half of their weight loss clinic.
Of course, it is no coincidence that MPI is investigating the chocolate business. Nobody – and the government and media mean nobody – can flout any authoritarian Covid policies, especially those with high social standing. A doctor pushing back is a massive red flag, and the state must make that person pay a high price and pay a high price for all to see. They are not to only lose their ability to practice as a doctor; they must be ruined. Thus the state uses any state apparatus available to go after Girouard and her family business.
The threat of fraud charges and the MPI investigation are not about pursuing justice or doing what is right. Instead, they are about sending a warning to everyone, especially medical professionals; the state will use its full power to punish any dissent – we will crush you.
This punitive and vengeful behaviour is not the behaviour of a liberal democratic government. On the contrary, it is the behaviour of tyranny. The friend who sent a link to the story of the MPI investigation expressed it thus:
“They have her in their sights… Long story short, don’t ever go against the grain.”
He is right. We have a Labour government that will brook no dissent and, if you come to their attention, they are coming after you with everything they can throw at you.
And the media? They are cheering it on. The fourth estate is merging with the first.
